Glass types we replace, and where each one belongs
The right glass depends on where it sits, how big it is and what the standard calls for. Picking the wrong grade is how people end up with glass that fails an inspection or shatters into shards.
014mm float (annealed)
Standard clear glass for small, low-risk windows that sit outside the safety zones. The cost-effective pick where the standard allows it.
02Toughened (tempered)
Heat-treated to be around five times stronger, and it breaks into blunt granules instead of shards. Required in doors, low windows and wet areas.
03Laminated
Two sheets bonded with a tough interlayer, so it holds together when broken. The pick for security, noise reduction and overhead glass.
04Obscure / patterned
Textured privacy glass for bathrooms, ensuites and entry sidelights, available toughened wherever the standard requires safety glass.
Not sure which you need? We work it out on site against AS 1288 before we quote, so you are never paying for more glass than the job needs, or risking less.
The qualified difference
Glazing is not a licensed trade in WA, so anyone can have a crack at it, and plenty turn up with no ticket at all. We turn up with the lot, 15 years on the tools and every job glazed to Australian Standard AS 1288.

When does a window have to be safety glass?

AS 1288
Safety glass standard
Australian Standard AS 1288 sets out exactly where ordinary annealed glass is not allowed and safety glass becomes mandatory. It is not optional, and it is not down to the glazier's mood on the day.
The common safety-glass zones in a home
- In a door, or within 300mm of a door edge
- Windows with a sill low to the floor
- Bathrooms, ensuites and around baths
- Sidelights and full-height glazing
- Pool fences and balustrade panels
- Any low pane a child could walk into
Plenty of older Perth homes still carry plain annealed glass in these spots from before the rules tightened. If we spot it during a repair we will tell you, so you can bring it up to standard while the frame is already open.
Where safety glass is required
Glass in and beside doors, within 300mm of a door, low windows close to the floor, bathrooms and wet areas, and anywhere a person could fall against it all call for toughened or laminated glass under AS 1288.

Timber vs aluminium frame reglazing
How we reglaze a window depends on the frame. Perth has plenty of both, and each is fitted in a different way.
Aluminium frames
- Glass sits in a rubber gasket or wedge bead
- Often reglazed in place without pulling the sash
- Common in homes built from the 1980s on
- Tired seals are where water gets in, so we renew them
Timber frames
- Glass bedded in putty or held by timber beads
- Found in older character and heritage homes
- Takes more prep, cleaning and care to do well
- We re-putty or re-bead for a clean, sealed finish

Either way the glass is bedded properly and sealed so it is weathertight, not just wedged in to get through the day.
What a Perth window replacement costs
There is no flat price for glass, and anyone who quotes one sight unseen is guessing. A handful of things move the number up and down.
Glass type and thickness
Toughened and laminated cost more than plain float, but they are non-negotiable where the standard calls for them.
Pane size
A small bathroom window is a very different job to a 2.4m sliding door panel.
Access
Ground-floor and easy reach is quick. Upstairs, over a roof or down tight side access takes longer.
Frame and prep
A clean aluminium gasket swap is fast. Re-puttying an old timber sash is more involved.
Urgency
After-hours emergency call-outs carry a call-out rate. Booked in for daytime is the cheapest way to do it.
We quote up front and in plain numbers before any work starts. No surprise invoices, and no while-we-are-here extras you did not ask for.
Measured right. Cut right. Glazed right.
Measured right
On-site laser measure to a 2-3mm tolerance, and the right glass picked for the job and the standard, not guesswork.
Cut right
Float, toughened or laminated, cut to size with polished edges. We carry stock sheets so most repairs are done on the spot.
Glazed right
Installed clean, sealed properly and made safe. Glazed to AS 1288, signed off and tidied up before we leave.

Questions about window & glass replacement
Can't see yours? Call us and we will give you a straight answer, not a sales pitch.

Can you replace a broken window the same day?
Most standard single panes, yes. We carry float, toughened and laminated stock, so the common sizes are measured, cut and fitted in the one visit. Oversized, obscure or specialty glass gets ordered in, and we make the opening safe the same day in the meantime.
Do I have to replace the whole window or just the glass?
Usually just the glass. If the frame is sound we reglaze it in place, which is faster and cheaper than a full replacement. We only recommend a new frame when the existing one is corroded, rotten or beyond a proper repair.
Is my bathroom window required to be safety glass?
If it falls inside the safety zones under AS 1288, such as a low sill or right by a wet area, then yes, it needs toughened or laminated glass. We check the spot on site and tell you what the standard requires before we quote.
My double-glazed unit has fogged up. Can that be fixed?
A foggy unit means the edge seal has failed and moisture is trapped between the panes. The sealed unit is replaced rather than repaired, and we match the size, glass type and spacer so it performs like the original.
Do you replace glass in old timber sash windows?
Yes. Timber reglazing takes more care, with the old putty or beads removed, the rebate cleaned up, the glass bedded and then re-puttied or re-beaded for a clean, sealed finish.
Will my home insurance cover a broken window?
Often, for break-ins or storm damage, depending on your policy. We can provide an itemised invoice and photos of the damage and the repair to make the claim straightforward.
